How to Customize Your Canvas Dashboard (Step by Step)

It's week three, and my Canvas dashboard is a wall of identical cards with names like "BIO-1110-04 FA26." I click the wrong class twice before I've even finished my coffee.

Here's the quick fix. To customize your Canvas dashboard, open Dashboard, use the three-dot Dashboard Options menu to pick a view, then click the three-dot icon on any course card to change its color, give it a nickname, or move it. The whole thing takes about five minutes, and you don't need any extensions.

What is the Canvas dashboard?

The Canvas dashboard is the first page you see after logging in to Canvas LMS, the learning platform made by Instructure. It's your home base: a card or list for each course, plus a sidebar with your To Do items and recent feedback.

Everything below is from the student view in a web browser. Your school controls some settings, so a few options might look slightly different or be missing.

How to change Canvas dashboard views

Canvas gives you three views, and switching between them is the fastest way to change Canvas dashboard layout.

  1. Click Dashboard in the global navigation on the left.
  2. Click the three-dot Dashboard Options icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose Card View, List View, or Recent Activity.

Here's what each one does:

  • Card View: a tile for every course. Best for jumping into a class fast.
  • List View: a planner-style list of assignments and to-dos by date. I switch to this during exam weeks.
  • Recent Activity: a feed of announcements, discussions, and other updates.

In Card View, the same menu may also show a Color Overlay option, which controls whether your course color tints any course images.

How to customize Canvas course card colors and nicknames

Colors and nicknames are the part of how to customize Canvas that makes the biggest difference day to day.

  1. In Card View, click the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of a course card.
  2. On the Color tab, type a short name in the Nickname field, like "Bio Lab" or "Stats."
  3. Click a color swatch, or type a hex code if you have a specific shade in mind.
  4. Click Apply.

Nicknames are personal, so only you see them. Your instructor and classmates still see the official course name. The color usually carries over to your Canvas Calendar too, which makes due dates easier to scan.

How to reorder and choose courses on your Canvas dashboard

Once the cards look right, put them in an order that matches your week. There are two ways to move them:

  • Drag and drop: click and drag a card to a new spot in Card View.
  • Move tab: open the card's three-dot menu, select Move, then pick an option such as Move to top, Move up, Move down, or Move to bottom.

To control which classes appear at all, go to Courses, then All Courses. Click the star next to each course you want on your Canvas dashboard. Starred (favorited) courses show as cards, and unstarred ones drop off. If you haven't starred anything, Canvas shows a default set of your current courses.

Only current, published courses can be starred, so last semester's classes won't come back this way.

How to make Canvas pretty (and easier to read)

If you're wondering how to make Canvas pretty, the trick is a little planning, not a theme pack. This is the setup I like:

  • Color by subject: greens for sciences, blues for math, warm colors for humanities.
  • Consistent nicknames: one format for every card, like "BIO 110" or a short word plus an emoji.
  • Order by schedule: Monday's first class goes top left.

For readability, open Account, then Settings, and look under Feature Options. Depending on your school, you may find toggles for a high contrast UI or a dyslexia-friendly font.

How to change notifications and your profile picture in Canvas

A tidy dashboard helps, but so does fewer pings. To adjust notifications:

  1. Click Account, then Notifications.
  2. For each type (due dates, announcements, grading, and so on), choose a frequency: right away, daily summary, weekly summary, or off.
  3. Changes save automatically. You can also pick a specific course at the top of the page to set different preferences for it.

To add a profile picture, go to Account, then Settings, and click your avatar image to upload one. If clicking it does nothing, your school has turned profile pictures off.

When a setting isn't where I expect it (schools rename and hide things), Guidy, an AI study helper for Windows and Mac, can read my screen when I ask and point to the exact menu, one step at a time.

When Canvas customization won't work

Some limits are worth knowing before you spend an evening on this:

  • Your school is in charge of some options. Profile pictures, Feature Options, course images, and which courses are published are all set at the school or instructor level.
  • The mobile app is different. The Canvas Student app has its own layout, so your browser setup won't look identical on your phone.
  • Restyling extensions are third-party. Browser extensions that add dark themes or custom backgrounds to Canvas aren't made by Instructure. Before installing one, check what permissions it asks for, since many can read and change everything on your Canvas pages, and check whether your school allows it.

Once you know how to customize Canvas dashboard views, colors, and order, the rest of the semester gets easier to manage. Next, I'd turn that organized dashboard into better studying with my guide on how to create a study guide, and if you've got a class presentation coming up, see how to add speaker notes in Google Slides.

FAQs

Why can't I customize my Canvas dashboard?

Usually it's because you're in a view that doesn't support it. Course colors, nicknames, and moving cards only work in Card View, so switch views from the Dashboard Options menu first. If an option is still missing, your school may have disabled it, and only your Canvas administrator can turn it back on.

How do I get a course back on my Canvas dashboard?

Go to Courses, then All Courses, and click the star next to the course. Starred courses appear on your dashboard as cards. If there's no star, the course is likely from a past term or unpublished, and those can't be added. Ask your instructor if a current course is missing entirely.

Do Canvas course nicknames change what my professor sees?

No. Nicknames only change how a course appears for you. Your professor, classmates, and school still see the official course name everywhere. That makes nicknames a safe way to shorten long course codes into something you'll actually recognize at a glance, like "Chem" or "Spanish 2."

Does Canvas have a dark mode?

Not on the web version, at least not as a built-in theme. The Canvas Student mobile app supports a dark appearance, and your device settings may control it. On a computer, some students use third-party dark-mode browser extensions, but check their permissions carefully and follow your school's rules before installing one.
